That's not a Microsoft site. And its first sentence is: "There is no
option to stop or turn off Windows Updates using the Control Panel or
Settings app in Windows 10, as it used to be with earlier versions of
Windows." It then goes on to tell you various tweaks - basically use
group policy editor (not available on Home or Pro), pretend you're on
dialup, or use a third party tool.

What might be useful to know is what is the last version of Skype that
will allow you to turn off automatic updates. Does anybody happen to
know?

I have 7.40 and that still allows you to turn off automatic updates.

However that point is moot, because Skype has been sending this e-mail
message to its 7.X users (I got mine on October 3):

"We see that you recently used Skype version 7. If you've already
updated to Skype version 8 please ignore this message.

We're letting you know that support for Skype version 7 will end on
November 1, 2018 on desktop devices and November 15 on mobile and
tablet devices. When support ends, we'll begin requiring updates to
version 8. Although you may be able to use older versions for a little
while, we encourage you to update today to avoid any interruption."

I've not updated to 8 yet - at least not on my Windows laptop - as I'm
not using Skype at the moment. But the update is scheduled for the Next
Big Trip (TM).

Good to know. The date "support" ends is pretty irrelevant to me, but
the date the program ceases to operate - THAT is "tres importante".
Because until that happens, we can keep using the old version, and not
have to put up with all of the "new and improved" (cough) junk that is
inevitably going to be thrust upon us (like probably an enriched ad or
eye candy environment, just for starters)

I interpret the message as "the program ceases to operate" shortly
after November 1, because at that time support ends and "When support
ends, we'll begin REQUIRING updates to version 8." (emphasis mine).

Anyway, today I updated to version 8 (8.33.0.50) and - as David
mentioned - that indeed does *not* have a setting to turn automatic
updates off!

Well, that is most annoying! As for the "requiring" bit, sometimes I
interpret this as "we are going to bug you until you do". (hope springs
eternal?) :-) At any rate, it will be interesting to see if anybody
comes up with a workaround for that automatic update issue in Skype, but I'm
not holding my breath.
