Is there some sort of Wizard to run to test if my
current hardware & applications will run on
Windows 8 equivalent?
Try Windows Compatibility Center

Thanks, but I have all these and I need something
to test them automatically; there being so many.

You want the Upgrade Assistant.

And no, that tool really doesn't have a clue about anything.

But, it offers you a way to generate a list, for further research.
Some of the info is solid, and some, imaginary at best.

Good heavens! It says 72 of the apps are
incompatible!

Did I mention "imaginary" ? :-)

Don't buy new copies, all at once...

Some stuff really won't run. Such as Windows Virtual PC (used
for WinXP Mode) and Microsoft VPC2007. I think they're blacklisted,
and the OS won't allow them to load. You can install them, but the
instant you try to run the executable, nothing happens.

For the rest of it, you're going to have to test and
see what number less than 72, are busted. In some cases,
it might only be a portion of a program that is broken
(a function you don't use).

Seriously, before you buy a copy of Windows 8, you
should be testing with the Win 8.1 Preview instead.
The license is good to around Jan.15 of next year.

I don't know if the "Upgrade" logic works in here, or if it
is only "Clean Install". In any case, you could grab a spare
disk if you want, and try installing it. If you wanted
to actually install over top of your current disk, make sure you
have a System Image or something, to restore with later.

I have mine loaded on an empty disk, and plug it in occasionally.
I was testing VirtualDub on 8.1 the other day.

Thank you. But I'll wait another 12 months or so
before I convert. And I'll do the "Clean install
with a Win8 store disk" even though it will cost a
bit more.
