Default SFC /Scannow results in "Insert your Windows XP Professional C
am sure just trying to help here, because I was stumbling over this
exact issue a few mos.ago.

recap that is truly important:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Setup

You will see various entries here on the right hand side. The one we
want is called:

SourcePath

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\SourcePath

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Setup
\ServicePackSourcePath

This should be pointing to the location C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles
(assuming C:\ is the boot drive.)
