A friend has Windows 8.1 on his laptop but did not yet receive the
famous "Download Windows 10" icon (is it called like that in English?)
in the system tray.
What can he do?

He can give thanks, and then install GWX Control Panel to ensure that
the icon does not appear later.

It IS his intention to upgrade to W10 !

Whatever he wants to do, the fact that the updates didn't offer the W10
icon is warning IMO. The laptop may not be W10 compatible, as already
implied in other posts.

W10 supposedly preserves enough of the existing OS that he can revert if
necessary or desirable (but only in the first 30 days after installing
W10. So my first step would be to backup everything. 2nd step would be
to make repair media, something that should be done in any case.

I tend to be paranoid about data loss, so I urge you to persuade him to
buy an external drive and back up all data. 1TB drives are well under
$100 these days. Cheap insurance IMO. There will also be room to image
the whole system, which IMO would be a good idea too.

Both routes...GWX app and the current 1511 download will perform a
compatibility test prior to final installation. The GWX though provides
this information from the icon in the tray on Win7Sp1 and 8.1 Update,
the media creation route does it after Win10 setup starts the install
process.
