SD is the norm for laptops etc. Micro SD is what go into phones.

Agreed. Sometimes called SDHC, but that refers to the capacity not the
shape. About the shape and size of a standard UK postage stamp, with one
corner cut off.

You can get an adapter to allow you to put the tiny micro SD card into
a larger SD adapter and then into your Laptop.

Poundshops often sell SD card readers (look like memory sticks with a
slot) that come with such adapters; might be cheaper than just the
adapter on its own! Or, they often (sometimes it seems like "most") come
with a micro-SD card.

Look in device manager and see if there are any ! next to the device
(or any device like unknown). You might be missing drivers.

Certainly, if the machine wasn't bought new, and there's any reason to
suspect that Windows has been reinstalled at any time, it's quite
possible for the relevant driver not to have been installed. I think
under some circumstances, hardware for which no driver has been
installed may not show up _at all_ - rather than just with a ! - in
Device Manager.

It's also possible (I think it's a setting in Windows, but may be
hardware-specific) for the reader not to show up when there's no
(working) card in it.

Have you verified the memory card is good? Have you tried another
card or put the same in another machine?
