I find it better to pin programs to the menu rather than the desktop.
I have *far* more programs that I use frequently to be able to pin them all
to the start menu and be able to find them without scrolling or searching.
Having a large 1920x1080 screen means that there's plenty of room to lay out
icons while still being able to "read" each icon with sensible resolution.
Once I've laid out my desktop, I save a screenprint of it in case Windows
decides to mess it up, which is has done a few times - at least I've got a
specimen that I can use to drag the icons back to where I expect them to be.
