I hammer a screwdriver into the vent hole.
For ultimate satisfaction, place the drive on a baulk of wood and hammer a
fat 6" nail through the casing somewhere off-centre of the circular hub
which is usually visible even on the outside of the case. You can apply
maximum brute force and imagine you are driving the nail into a sensitive
part of the anatomy of your worst enemy :-)
The MOD in the UK used insist (*) that disk-disposal contractors shave the
oxide off each of the platters, and then, for maximum paranoia, the oxide
must to be returned to the MOD, which suggests a fear of an unscrupulous
person gluing each bit of oxide back into the correct place on the disk. :-)
