Default "Connect to VPN" window keeps opening

I've been running a home network with a WinXP SP1 (main computer) and a
Win2K machine for a year or so now without any problems. They are networked
using a router, which is connected to my cable modem to provide network
access to the internet.

Last night I added a Win98 machine to the network. I wanted to transfer
files between it and the WinXP machine, but neither machine could see the
other. In an attempt to fix this I ran the Network Setup Wizard (as found in
the Advanced Properties tab of my LAN network card). I told it that my
computer connects to the internet through a network hub and it correctly
identified the network connection. I didn't bridge any other network
connections (as it also detected my Bluetooth connection and Firewire port).

After this the network connection seems to be working fine, I can see each
machine from the other without any problems.

However, I also have a VPN connection to my work configured, and now every
little while the Connect to VPN window spontaneously and unexpectedly opens,
asking for my username and password. This is annoying in itself, but each
time it does it my entire web connection locks up, as if my cable modem had
crashed. After clicking Cancel on the VPN everything springs back to life,
but I'm finding it rather frustrating -- particularly as the VPN window
sometimes opens in the background so I can't even see it's there.

Does anyone know why this might be happening?

Is there any way to undo the configuration changes that the Network Setup
Wizard has made? I can't find any config windows for this anywhere (nothing
more advanced than turning the firewall on and off) and have no idea what it
actually did. The Win98 computer will be leaving my network again shortly so
I'm not too concerned if I lost access to it again.

My thanks for any help anyone can offer,
