I am legion, for we are many.

This usage of the word “legion” derives from the New Testament story of
the devils of Gadara as first recounted in the gospel of Mark 5:1-19,
then adapted to appear also in the gospels of Matthew and Luke. An
insane man, who lived among the tomb caves and cut himself with stones,
confronted Jesus as He arrived. The demon spoke through the man, saying,
“Don't bother me.” Jesus, recognizing the possessing demon, asks, “What
is your name?” The demon replied, “I am Legion, for we are many.” The
man pleads not to be sent away from this area, presumably where he was a
native. The demon(s), expecting to be expelled from the man, ask to be
sent into a nearby herd of swine. Jesus obligingly transfers the
demon(s) into the swine. The swine suddenly take on the madness the man
had been experiencing and rush down to the shore of the lake and are
drowned, all 2,000 of them. Jesus, as a Jew and abhorring swine, felt no
compunction about their demise, but the people of the area, non-Jews and
pork eaters, had just lost much of their yearly food supply. They begged
Jesus to move on. It seems unlikely they were compensated for their
economic disaster. But this was the kind of story people of the time
would have found convincing as to the magical powers of Jesus.

Snit will not be pleased. For one, he not only *abhors* religion,
Christianity is at the top of his hate list. Secondly, etymology is
something he laughs at. When you're creating your own dictionary, like
he is, a thing like word history gets in his way.
