This will not work for me. Essentially, I have shortcuts on my
desktop. For all but one site (which I must be able to access),
double-clicking on the .url link starts Firefox and navigates to the
site. However, this specific site requires IE and thus the FF browser
displays a message to this effect. I need to manually open IE and
paste the link so that it can start.

So I am trying to learn if one can have a shortcut which would call a
different browser. A Google search suggested that I change the "URL"
string in the shortcut as follows:

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe "https://URL"

However, it does not work (error message stating that it is invalid)

IE Tab can be configured to always open specific sites in the IE mode.

Correct. I have several sites configured this way and they work
without issues.
