A win7 question but I included win10 in case it happens there too and
because I think a lot of win7 experts now only read win10.

If I pass the cursor over a Firefox or Edge section of my task bar, a
box an inch high with a list of all the Firefox or Edge windows pops up
and stays sometimes for a long while. Other programs like Solitaire,
Eudora, Forte Agent don't do this, though they may pop up an unobtrusive
non-annoying tool tip.

Is there a way to get rid of these browser boxes?

See the other suggestions, but also: in Taskbar properties, do you have
Taskbar buttons set to Never combine, Combine when taskbar is full, or
Always combine, hide labels? And, when using a browser, do you tend to
open several windows, rather than using tabs?

Windows and tabs both. This box in quest4ion just had a list of the
currently showing tab in each window. The same list showed up above
each task bar entry. It was not useful because I did have it set to
Never Combine and I coudl see the taskbar entry for each window, didn't
need a shorter way to get to it.

7+ Taskbar Tweaker took care of things, and has a few other options too
I have not yet looked at. I'll look at aero tweaker too.

Thanks all.

[I (a) use tabs in browsers and (b) have my taskbar set to Never
combine, so this doesn't bother me. I just wondered if you had multiple
browser windows open (which you probably wouldn't do with Solitaire,
Eudora {blast from the past department!}, or Agent), combined with one
of the combine options - in which case Windows has only this way to let
you select (to be "Restored") the one you want.]
