Default iPad's e-book readers and data storage

As an new ipad owner, I regret I bought the piece of junk even tho
it will mainly used for reading books. The ipad is implemented as
just a remote terminal to a mainframe/icloud. Saving stuff to the
ipad is done by the app & accessed by the app; only problem is
it may have been "saved" as 'cache memory' & shutting down the ipad
will clean the cache memory & one can lose the book being read. Little
things that the 'ios' group claim one should research & know about
before buying the ipad even if it is not disclosed in any review.
The "real" storage area is in the icloud & be prepared to pay crapple
monthly storage fees. I got notification that I had less than 25%
of free storage left after only 2-1/2 weeks of ownership & the only
thing in icloud was the backup after having upgraded to ios 11.1.1
on boot-up.

Are you sure that iCloud is the only option to store local data for that
particular e-book reader app?

are there other apps for reading e-books? Kindle?
