Default Lock-Ups MS faults Display Driver

Hi,

My Compaq Presario 2190US began Locking-Up, several months ago, only when I
was on ebay or some other site where there were a lot of graphic page
downloading.

I sent Error Message to Microsoft and the reply window instructed me to
download the lastest Display Driver from Ati Technologies, which is my OEM's
display system.

I did that with no results. And then the Locking-Up become more frequent and
random. I thought it may have been a worm/virus and have used Spybot as well
as OneCare and only 2 cookies were infected and the Win/32Nachi.B Worm.

Then I went back to ATI and attempted to download the old driver and control
Panel installation (they are separate) and all confusion erupted on my
computer - so what I have now is only the latest driver update 2004 and the
Uninstall program.

BTW - I realized that after I had initially downloaded the latest driver
that after I did not uninstall the original driver and control panel programs.

My machine has not yet Locked-Up but I am doing something different, b/c I
am afraid that it will, so I the smaller IE6 open, and have not maximized it
as I always did b/4 following a crash.

Oh, I also tried decreasing the Display Acceleration which didn't help any.

Best Buy Tech said it would cost $69. to diagnose problem then another, at
least, $129.00 to resolve it and I don't think I want to spend that much.
It's less than 3yo w/a Memory upgrade and an additional PC card purchase so
the total cost since purchase is now about $1000. I don't know if I should
invest more money or just wait another year and struggle and avoid using it
until Window's next OS edition is available. If anyone has a suggestion or
knowledge of this Locking-Up and freezing please reply.

Oh, usually, just b/4 it locks-up there is a transparency in the current
window and part of the menu bar of another window (nothing else open) can be
seen. Or sometimes it's just a blue line that seems to have suddendly melted
across the upper portion of the screen - and then after 20 seconds or so - my
pointer vanishes.

Thank you,
Jean
