Sounds like you might benefit from some syncing application for your backups,
if you have lots of files you don't want to back up repeatedly (because they
haven't changed). I use synctoy to "back up" my D: partition (cycling round
two or three backups, though that's not relevant to this discussion); other
sync utilities are available.
