I would hide the Inventec one, or hold off using it, until it
disappears. You probably just have a RealTek NIC chip on the
motherboard, and that's what Windows Update has triggered on.

That's what I did; I hid it. As far as I can tell, my network
connection is working fine. What was unsettling was the absolute lack
of info from Microsoft and the multiple (three pages worth) inquiries
questioning if it was an official, legitimate Microsoft update or if it
was malware inserted in a backdoor way into Microsoft's Update
procedures.

I'll just proceed on the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" principle
and give the dust time to settle.
