With SP2 a big aid to success was to use an SP2 CD. You lost the hassle of a
long download.

Same here on my most of test PCs and home PCs. I do make backups before I
do them just in case. One time, I had a laptop/notebook's SP1 to SP2
crashed, but it was fine after I resumed. It was a known issue (can't
remember the details since it was back in 2006 or so).
