Default Perplexing Windows Media Player 12 Problem

Suddenly this evening, about one-half of my wave files (*.wav) will no
longer play on Windows Media Player version 12.

I can find no distinction between the wave files that will play and
those that will not.

Last Sunday, they all played as they normally do.

Now I get the message "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The
Player might not support the file type or a required codex might not be
installed on your computer."

The "Web Help" is no help at all.

I transferred these SAME FILES to my old Windows XP laptop for
comparison, and Windows Media Player version 11 played them with no problem.

I already tried doing a System Restore back to a month previous, which
did not solve the problem.

Before I abandon Windows Media Player and convert to VLC Media Player, I
am hoping someone reading this group has had a similar problem and
perhaps a solution.

Thanks.
