Loss of video and power options when upgraing to XP pro
I upgraded to XP Pro from XP Home on my new eMachine and
encountered the followint, which stupmped the tech support folks, and acually has a simple fix, though not very obvious. Problem: Loss of video and power options after upgrade to Windows XP pro from XP Home, due to user selecting "skip" in response to this message: Wanted file VIAAGPI.SYS, (it could not be found by auto or browse). This sys file is not located on the eMachine's restore CDs or the XP Pro install disk. It can be skipped, but this causes the S3 video display driver to be lost, which is not obvios because a generic driver is used. The proper action is not to autoselect or select by browsing. The driver should be selected using the "Don't search, I will choose." option and choosing VIA Tech or VIA CPU to AGP Controller. Symptoms: None of the S3 tabs appear in the advanced display properties. A generic driver is used that can not standby or hibernate. No video display adapter appears in the divice manager until the driver is reinstalled and the VIA tech (or CPU) to AGP controller (in the system device list) has not driver listed. Consequently, when the system tries to use any of the ACPI compliant power funtions, nothing happens. Attempst to turn off the screen invoke the log on screen. It looks to the user as if the user moved the mouse just as a power down feature is activated, thus cancelling it. How to fix: The solution is very simple. Go to Device Manager/System Devices/VIA CPU to AGP Controller/Driver Update/Don't search (Install from list/I will choose) and select VIA Tech (orCPU) to AGP controller. This will install the drivers, pci.sys and viaagpi.sys. Reboot and the Video display adapter, S3 Graphics Pro Savage DDR will appear in the device listing, and the other features will be restored (S3 advanced display tabs, and ACPI power options). |

But your fix was simple - you got my computer back working again for the chrismas hols and releived a lot of strain with computer not working right- thank you - Rob Fraser |
