Double Icon Display on Desktop

Default Double Icon Display on Desktop

Whenever I put something on my desktop it show up as double icons. I
delete one but can't delete the other one and it will not disappear
until I reboot. How do I correct this?

Same thing happen when you start Windows XP in its safe mode and then
retest? And HOW are you "putting something" on your desktop?

When I save a file to my desktop and I have not tried safe mode yet.
