KB3156417
Yesterday, I got the new list of Patch Tuesday updates; I did a screen
print so I could check the individual ones easily. The screen print did not show KB3156417. Today, as I was determining which updates I wanted to install, it showed up. According to Microsoft Support, it's "May 2016 update rollup for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1." Any thoughts on whether it's needed for a computer on a home network? Anyone have problems with it? Microsoft's updates are driving me crazy. They change from day to day on my computer, some disappearing from the list without my installing them, some added when I thought I was done. -- Thank you, Jo-Anne |

I installed this back in May, and I've seen nothing untoward since. It seems as safe as houses. Ed |

The rollup updates are usually smaller, non-security fixes. The June rollup is rather important, as one of it's fixes is for Windows Update. It fixes the issue where it can take up to several hours for WU to find or 'download' updates. Is the June update you're referring to KB3161608? I was going to install it yesterday (I always wait a few weeks to install updates to make sure they're OK), but it disappeared. Now it looks like KB3168965 is the one that's supposed to make update downloads quicker... -- Jo-Anne |

KB3168965 is a July security update that includes Win32K.sys, which is the file that is confusing Windows Update. With the rollup, Win32K.sys won't cause the long updates anymore. -- If there is a no_junk in my address, please REMOVE it before replying!
