An updated O/s probably wouldn't run on my computer -- not enough
resources. People are using Windows XP because they aren't rich
enough
to buy a new computer every few months.

IIRC, I started using Windows XP when it was first introduced in
2002 -
it really is 'old hat' now! If you drove a motor vehicle of that
age you
might well expect it to suffer more breakdowns than a new or
nearly new car!

Â*Â*Â* What is in a Operating System comparable to the mechanical items
in an automobile, which can wear out?

Will 'vulnerabilities' suffice?

Â*Â*Â* No.

Â*Â*Â* You were saying that an OS wears as it runs, and eventually fails
due to something wearing out.

Well, FWIW, there's something not quite right about this:-

https://www.virustotal.com/gui/url/8...3427/detection

Â*Â*Â* And in twenty five words or less, could you explain what that is
when it is at home?

It's a scan by Virus Total of the website I saw mentioned in your
message header.

It's a scan by an uneven collection of tools.

Â*Â* CRDFÂ* Malicious

Who exactly is "CRDF" ???

The participants in that page, are rather a rag-tag lot.

It does seem like that!

Do you trust the operation/organization?

Perhaps for CRDF, their detection code goes something like
this.

Â*Â* BEGIN
Â*Â*Â*Â* if ("www.") then printf("Malicious\n");
Â*Â* END

Which is a good zeroth order approximation.

And, the code is easy to maintain.

(This is a bit of an inside joke, because at work, we had
Â*a guy who would say "I could code that up in three lines",
Â*so for joke-purposes, you had to make sure joke-code had
Â*exactly three lines.)

Â*Â* Paul

Thanks for your comments, Paul.

Have you been retired for as long as me?!!

We secure our valuables – our wallets, keys, and homes. We know that, if
left unsecured, they can easily be a target for criminals. So it makes
sense to think the same way about the information stored on all our
devices.

Computers, tablets, phones and other personal devices hold your emails
and your financial and tax documents (with your Social Security
numbers). Criminals who get access to this valuable information can
commit identity theft, put harmful software on your devices, or both.

What’s one easy way to help protect all of this sensitive information?
Update your software regularly, and as soon as possible when a newer
version comes out. What’s an even easier way? Set the updates to happen
automatically. Don’t ignore reminders to update. Criminals look to
exploit vulnerabilities before the software companies can fix it.
Delaying gives hackers time to access your information – even when a
patch is out there to lock them out.

So what software should you be updating?

The CVE has no text in it yet.

A sure sign of "qvality".

To make it more scary, why didn't they jump out
and say "boo" loudly.

You'd swear the ex-employees who maintained the MSFT KB
worked there or something (where the text for a KB was
always a day late and a dollar short).

What I wanted to see, was a "range of release numbers",
because if you look at early enough versions of Firefox,
they're not affected.

Can't read it. Site "needs" javascript.

You're right. My Firefox clone is not affected.
The vulnerability must have been introduced by an "automatic
update".
Beware automatic updates.

Which is why I downgraded to an earlier, less bloated version of
Firefox, that runs faster. I really don't want all the latest features

Yes, slow fun is no fun (in software, anyway - some kinds of fun are
nicer slow!).

I agree, older versions run better, especially on older hardware.

Firefox 2 (.0.0.20, IIRR) - last that will run on '98. (I think Kernelex
will allow up to 3 or 4; I haven't tried.)
Around Firefox 28 - last before the Australis user interface.
Firefox 57 - last that will run the old sort of extensions.
Firefox 58 - last that will run on XP.
(I may have those last two the wrong way round.)
They're on version sixtysomething now.

I - even on W7 - run version 27. (Incidentally, the version of
DownloadHelper I have to run with that still seems to work with most
sites, including YouTube.) [I use Chrome for the sites that won't work
properly in F27.]

We're less paranoid about them, certainly; but we also achieve them in
other ways, not relying entirely on the browser for them.

It's all part of the planned obsolescense syndrome.

But in my experience the "latest features and updates" often give more
bells and whistles, but with fewer pistons and cylinders.
