Default Wife's Install

YW.

As far as I know, that was the only site that was giving the problem.

As of right now, without any further changes to her pc, the problem
has gone away. It maybe only temporary, but I hope it is gone
forever.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help.

First I have reinstalled XP Pro again since the the first post using
a CD that has SP2 integrate into it. I have used this CD several
times and never had any issues. The original install disk had SP1
only. I kept the partition scheme for imaging using Acronis.

I did not install SP3 but downloaded and installed all the critical
update plus WMP 11. The only critical updates I did not install
were IE7 and IE8. I hate both of those.

Her account is Admin.

After all of this, the same issue remains except she dont get the
Login Screen anymore. When she goes to login at king.com she gets
redirected.
As you suggested, I ran Adaware to check for malware. It never
found anything.

So I told her to use my PC which has XP Pro also and as little as a
few months ago she could log in at king.com. Dang if my pc doesn't
do the same thing.

Right or wrong this has led me to some conclusions:
1. Recent XP dates have caused the problem, which one I have no
idea. 2. By talking to some friends that use either IE7 or IE8 they
do
not have the problem. This tells me that Microsoft has done
something with IE6 that causes this problem.

I am still hesitant to install IE7 or IE8. I have tried XP
knowledge base at microsoft and either I used a search parameter
they did not recognize or they have not updated yet. At any rate
they had nothing there to
help.
I am at wits end now and still need help. Thanks

Clean Install?

What SP level is your installation CD at?

The HDD is 250 gb split into four partitions, with the OS on C
drive and programs (very few) installed on D drive. She has 512
mb memory which her purpose is plenty. The machine is only used
for reading email and
playing on line games.

Since she is not a power user, I would reconsider your partitioning
strategy.

First of all, for just about everybody, the OS and all the apps
should be on the same partition. Second of all, for someone like
your wife, you might as well use just one partition for everything.
Simplicity has its advantages. And the performance will be just
fine. And if you image the entire hard drive, remember that
incremental images won't wind up taking too long.

This install has been a pain since day one. First time I
installed I only used SP2 and got all the updates.

What do you mean by the phrase "I only used SP2"? Does this mean
the CD is at the SP2 level and you chose to stay at SP2? I
wouldn't do that. Better to install SP3, using the complete
installation file:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

... and then install subsequent updates. And it's important to
install only the critical updates! Make sure you don't install
drivers, etc!
When I did that I could not get
rid of the login screen no matter what I did.

I wouldn't worry about that for now. Once everything is up and
running *correctly*, then see how other things are.

What kind of account is your wife using? Admin or Limited?

That is when I put back an
Acronis image of the initial install and installed SP3 with all
the critical
update. At that point everything looked great.

Here is what I have run into now. She plays games on king.com and
right now when she trys to log in there, as soon as she click into
the "username" box she is redirected to another site.

That is a sign of malware. What site is she redirected to?

We have seen this happen at no
other site, she can log into web email and several other sites
that she visits. To say the least she is irate because I can not
fix this.

Might as well do (another) Clean Install. And make sure the PC is
*not* connected to the Internet until SP3 is applied.

I went back reinstalled WinXP again and installed all the critical
updates without using SP3. Crap it does the same thing, so is not
SP3 and
has to be one of the updates. Which one I have no idea. I really
need some
help with this before she has a fit.

Repair Install or Clean Install?

By "does the same thing" do you mean redirecting to other sites? I
still think malware somehow slipped in. (It happens.)

Again, install only critical or "high-priority" updates. If you
wish, install only seven or eight at a time.
