Default Live Messenger has encountered a problem and needs to close

When I try to start Live Messenger, before I even get the chance to log in,
even before the first screen even appears, I get this error

Windows Live Messenger has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience.

I cannot even get to the point where I an ask what version I have installed.
I have uninstalled/reinstalled and cleared out folders with my account
specific info.

I recently had a virus that messed up the system a little. I have cleaned
up most of it, but this may be a lingering affect from that.
