So it seems, although I've set up a user called "me", I'm actually using one called "User"! On investigating, I discovered that "User" did have the ......Cache folder, but there was nothing in it. So I copied the 17-line Config.XML file I'd created (under "me".....Cache), turned off the weather gadget, turned it back on, and - it worked! Silly me. [] That's OK, even if you could remember, I almost certainly wouldn't understand how you became User :-) Although I think that's the default username. Have you looked to see if there is a 'me' that you inadvertently never logged in to? Click on the icon at the top of the right panel in the start menu, then I never knew that icon did that! Anyway, I now have the ...User Accounts window open, and it's showing just the one user, called User, with the same icon as that one ("acer" going diagonally). [Yes, I know the theoretical dangers of only having one account. I'll live with them.] on 'Manage another account', to see which accounts are present. But then exit without making any changes (at least that's what I try to do). I clicked the close button. Weather gadget now still working - though it does have the word "Forecasted", as mentioned in FredW's post below, and a _range_ of temperatures (9 - 3, which seems an odd way round - maybe it's today's peak and tonight's lowest). -- J. Meteo gadget not connect - now location
In message , FredW
writes: [] This morning (my time) the weather gadget gave "Forecasted" (= forecast from one day ago) suggesting the gadget lost contact again. So I deleted the gadget and changed the settings in Config.xml back (45 to 60, 15 to 30, 10 to 15, 15 to 30). After reinstalling the Weather gadget resumed working (current weather). I will keep both sets of Config.xml. Same here. Defaulting to London, UK, which is reasonable for me. (Probably the default; I see the "find location automatically" is greyed out, probably because my ISP doesn't provide the information.) I wondered if, now it is connected again, I could access the location database, so I entered charing, and was surprised to see four Charings offered, including "Charing, Kent, England, United Kingdom (close", which surprised me, as it's only a village! I selected it, but the gadget now shows "Kennington, GBR". Ah - maybe that "(close" actually said "(closest location)" or something like that; the find results box has no horizontal scroll bar! So I try ashford, which is a nearby town: it offers Ashford, England, United Kingdom Ashford, England, United Kingdom Ashford in the Water, Derbyshire, England, Uni (yes, the first one twice). So I select the first one, and it accepts it, and the gadget shows Ashford, GBR, 10 degrees; I try the second one, and it shows Ashford, GBR, 8 degrees! (Repeatable. By trying Maidstone, the nearest town in the other direction, which also shows 8 degrees, I've selected that one.) -- J. P. Gilliver. alt.windows7.general: Well editing that config.xml file got it working again for a few days but now it has again stopped. I read that changing values back and it starts working again but I can't be bothered to confirm that as it implies one will have to again and again and ... Just switched to Weather Networks gadget gives more than enough info and works. Mine is still working on two computers (knocking on wood...) |

It's not that, I tried changing just the services refresh line and saving it and that made no difference. Doing all 4 changes on both of my systems made them work. The location defaulted to London but it did allow me to change to my location in North Yorkshire and they are now both running perfectly. Mine just came up with can't connect again and this time I went into Config.XML file and changed the values to 120, 150, 100 and 150 and it started working again after restarting it. C:\Users\your name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Services\Cache Change the lines at the top with: services refresh="60"change from 60 to 45 service name="weather" operation interval="30"/change from 30 to 15 and also the lines at the bottom with: service name="stocks" operation interval="15"/change from 15 to 10 /service service name="currency" operation interval="30"/ change from 30 to 15 -- Faster, cheaper, quieter than HS2 and built in 5 years; UKUltraspeed http://www.500kmh.com/ |

Mine stopped working this morning, too. Maybe the key really is just to do an edit of one kind or another. Maybe the timestamp change makes it work. If so, a simple batch file could be made to kickstart it into action every so often. |

If so, a simple batch file could be made to kickstart it into action every so often. It's not a simple timestamp. I changed just the first line initially and saved it and that made no change. Next time it happens I'll try to remember to change one line at a time (I forgot I was going to it this time), top to bottom, and then the next time bottom to top and see if it's looking at a specific entry. -- Faster, cheaper, quieter than HS2 and built in 5 years; UKUltraspeed http://www.500kmh.com/ |
