Default MENU DESKTOP PROBLEMS - more crazed scrolling episode HELP

OK, I have figured out that control-alt-delete will usually stop at least
temporarily, the scrazy menuy scrolls.
OTHER behavior clues:
When I power up the computer I hear a clicking from the hard drive.
Sometimes when I'm using desktop functions, the desktop freezes.
I have tried the chkdsk function, which ran. the c: /F function aborted.

Does anyone have any suggestion?
