Cannot browse upstairs PC from Downstairs
I can see both PC's listed in Windows Explorer (under the Network tree on the left hand panel). I can browse both computers from the upstairs computer. I cannot browse the upstairs computer from my downstairs computer. The upstairs computer first asked for my downstairs Windows login, which I gave, and I was able to browse my downstairs PC from upstairs. There are two accounts on the upstairs computer and I can access both after entering their individual credentials. When I try to browse the upstairs computer from downstairs it prompts for the upstairs computer's username and password (the name of my downstairs PC is listed as the domain in the popup window). The username/password combo is rejected. I've tried every credential used on the upstairs PC but none are accepted. I opened the Credential Manager and there are no Windows credentials listed on either PC. I added a credential to the upstairs PC but I still wasn't able to browse it from downstairs. If I can't browse the upstairs PC from downstairs then I don't want the upstairs PC to be able to browse my downstairs PC. However, I can't find a way to retract whatever permission I gave the upstairs PC. Upstairs users have free reign to browse my User and Public folders. I'd appreciate any help to allow me to access the upstairs PC or to force the upstairs PC to enter my credentials for access as before. Thanks. |

No, the upstairs PC is directly connected to the router via Ethernet, the downstairs one is wireless. |

Could it be that the upstairs PC has been set to use Homegroups? You have to tick the radio button for user name and password access in network configuration. It's under "Advanced sharing settings." The other thing is that the upstairs PC could be considering the network a "public" network instead of a "private," in which case sharing is turned off by default. I've had Windows misidentify networks before. I've also had this problem. Windoz networking is the poorest written program I have ever seen. 1st you have to share it and then you have to add, yet another layer of nonsense to tell it "everyone". I have found that in my case, if you turn on a computer, you then must go out to lunch before anything will work on the network. Totally goofy. |

Could it be that the upstairs PC has been set to use Homegroups? You have to tick the radio button for user name and password access in network configuration. It's under "Advanced sharing settings." Thanks to all who replied. Homegroups had been disabled on both computers to eliminate complexity. I sort of resolved the access problem by using the following syntax for username: username = name_of_pc\account_username I was allowed to enter after providing the password of the account. The other thing is that the upstairs PC could be considering the network a "public" network instead of a "private," in which case sharing is turned off by default. I've had Windows misidentify networks before. I double-checked the networking and file sharing configuration of both computers and made sure they are the same. File and printer sharing and network discovery are enabled for Private network only. No permissions for Guest or Public networks. Both computers can now browse each other's Public folder as long as login credentials are provided. I changed my mind and decided not to provide others with my laptop login credentials, so I disabled password protected sharing. The upstairs PC is not prompted for my credentials when accessing the downstairs laptop, and they can access only my printer and Public folder. Good. However, my downstairs laptop is still being prompted for credentials to the upstairs PC. If I provide the upstairs credentials I can then browse all their User account folders, not just their Public folder. Fortunately they can still only access my printer and Public folder. Not perfect but I can live with it unless someone gets ****y about the fact that I can browse beyond their Public folder. |

What I do is add and then allow "Everyone" (create if neccessary) access. All my 8 pcs in house use this arrangement and none of them require any bs to access from any of the others. One of my goals was to limit everyone to a specific resource and folder on my laptop. I didn't want equal access to everywhere. |
