I've had no problems with Freeware so far. One shareware application
(Benign) didn't work after the installation of SP2 but the problem is
known and there is a hotfix available, on request, from Microsoft.

Does that mean some SP2 fixes are not available to people who build their
own PC? eg They are their own OEM.

I don't believe so. It's just that Microsoft, in it's wisdom, wants you
to specifically ask for certain hot fixes which aren't yet generally
available.

I use a number of freeware apps.

Post XPSP2 I've used;

3D Clipboard
A43 File Manager
Abakt
Adaware SE
Agent Ransack
Coppernic
Email Stripper
Everest System Utility
Firefox
Irfanview
Izarc
Mailwasher
Midipad
Mozilla
MyNetwork Server
Roboform
Sequoia View
SlimBrowser
Speed SwitchXP
Spyware Blaster
Spybot S&D
Startup Inspector
TightVNC

Probably some others that don't leap right to mind. Of these I've had no
issues. (no issues with any commercial applications either for that matter)

In my experience there is nothing special about freeware that makes it any
more or less likely to experience problems with SP2 than "pay for" software.
Actually i've had very few problems at all since my upgrade; Dreamweaver MX
runs on one computer and not another, which is confusing and annoying, but
thats it for SP2 problems here.

I'd like to know what may happen with users who choose not to install
SP2.......will there be issues in the future for software that has "fixes"
to accomodate SP2 on a computer that does not have SP2 installed??????

ViewKeyXP doesn't work on my system. That's the only thing so far.

Retail.

That is entirely up to the software manufacturer and not Microsoft.
If the software is made for SP-2, what ever feature depends on SP-2
will not properly function.
Then you need to ask the manufacturer for a work a round or get a
different product.
