Default cd/dvd drive doesn't work anymore

The cd/dvd drive on the computer (D: drive) no longer reads any type of disk
--dvd, data cd, or music cd-- and I can't figure out why. Whenever I put a
disk into the drive, the light next to the drive flashes like it is
functioning, but the computer fails to recognize that there is a disk in
there. If I click on the D: drive under My Computer, it prompts me to enter a
disk into the drive. I followed all the steps under XP's help and support
center for when the drive stops working, but it didn't help at all. This is
very frustrating. Can anyone help?

Hi,

Try a CD lens cleaner disk. These are commonly available at any store that
sells CD or DVD media.

Default cd/dvd drive doesn't work anymore

I have the same situation and in my case it is 100% not caused by dirty lens.

My PC have the following 2 optical drives:
1) SONY DVD-ROM
2) SAMSUNG COMBO Drive

All of a suddenly both drive can't read ANY media (CD/DVD). When I put any
media in it spinned in a very high speed (very noise) for a very long time
but nothing came up in the file explorer.

I did the following test to see what is real problem is:

Test 1

I changed to the following hardware.

1) SONY DVD-ROM
2) Lite-On DVD Burner

== Still can't read any media in the new and old drives

Test 2

Load a Ghost image 8 months ago see if it fix anything.

== Still can't read any media in the both drives.

Test 3

Used a "boot from DVD" Linux disk to see whether the drives work.

== Linux loaded successfully with both drives.

Conclusion: There is something wrong with Windows that stop me reading media
from both drives.

I'm so fed up and going to do a clean installation tonite and see how it
goes.....
