Losing Shares
No not the stock market! but a friend is having a problem with a new
Verbatim USB 250 GB drive http://www.verbatim.com.au/en_AU/pro...rive-usb-250gb formatted as NTFS. Operating system XP professional with SP2 installed with a wired network. There are several shared folders without any restrictions on the drive containing video files etc. They are accessible when he turns on his Beyonwiz PVR P1 . http://www.beyonwiz.com.au/DP_P1_overview.asp ie he can play files over the network. The problem arises if he safely removes the USB drive from the computer, turns off the computer; the next day when he turns on the computer and then plugs in the drive the shares have been lost, so he has to re-establish them. If he leaves the USB drive connected to the computer and then turns on, the shares remain. It seems Windows XP is forgetting the shares or a hidden file? is not being written to the drive? I have an almost identical set up and have no problems - I regularly remove my home assembled USB drive, cart it around town, plug it back in and all of my shared folders are still there and available to my Beyonwiz PVR P1. His network settings and router are the same as mine.. any thoughts? |

I would also check the Event Viewer. |

The next step when i get the chance to drive down to my friends place (well out of town) is to find out why presumably his computer is not saving his shares? A couple of additional remarks: - After re-reading your initial post I'm no longer sure which PC hosts the share, to which one the USB disk is connected and which one tries to access the share. - I wonder if you have network shares competing for the same drive letters as your USB drives. This is likely to cause problems. Current practice says that USB drives should use the low letters of the alphabet and network shares should use the high end. |

Thanks for that - he uses the USB disk to both receive new files (he is a stage producer and looks at a lot of audition material) and then plays back via his Beyonwiz PVR the files. So the "network" is very simple indeed - the computer is in one room and the Beyonwiz about 10 metres away in another, connected via a network cable. I'm just wondering if when he brought the disk to my place new I checked it and formatted NTFS for him and then I tested it with my Beyonwiz, so I set up a shared folder to do so. My friend rang me when he got home to say the share didn't work and i explained to him that he would have to set up the shares himself, a long pause and a feeling of dread! anyway over the phone I was able to talk him through the process and it worked. His system (which I built) is almost a clone of mine without the extra bells and whistles so my production video playback harddisk is my designated H drive same as his (I also have a G drive full of my own music compositions which is also shared over my 2 x PC, 1 x MAC G5 and 2 x Beyonwiz PVR's) and as I've said I move both my G and H drive around town in an out of various studios etc without any problems. |

..
I assume you're saying that the problem is now resolved. We are getting there Pegasus - I received this email from my friend quote: " visited the Event Viewer Systems and found 5 Warning messages have been present on bootups The server service was unable to recreate the share NewScripts because the directory F:\NewScripts no longer exists. Please run "net share NewScripts /delete" to delete the share, or recreate the directory F:\NewScripts. This was the same for the F: \Inprogress... Drama etc I ran commands as told for each of the 5 share directory warnings and there have been no warnings in Event Viewer Systems since. I take from this something is being saved in registry for shares on this computer... I would appreciate guidance in looking, fixing etc the registry for the actual share entries.... end quote Once again many thanks for the info on this and I'm pleased that my friend who is not really that computer literate is taking the initiative in this matter.. |

Mmh, well. The event viewer message you saw is there by design. It tells you that the NewScripts share could not be created because the F:\NewScripts does not exist. If the folder F:\NewScripts resides on the USB drive then deleting the share manually tends to generate exactly the problem that is the subject of your post. In other words, if you want the share NewScripts to point to F:\NewScripts whenever the USB disk is connected then deleting the NewScripts share might be somewhat counterproductive . . . |
