By apples and oranges, I am talking about my inability to access a
*much older version* of Windows Update using IE6, and you are talking
about your ability to access the *current version* of Windows Update
with IE6. You cannot prove or disprove what I experienced.

That's correct.

You can still get Windows updates if you have IE6 (from within the
control panel) however if you try to go to the Windows Updates page
and you are using IE6 it will redirect you to the IE8 download page.

You have completely lost me. First, I never use IE for anything but to
update. I usually click on either the Microsoft Update or the Windows
Update Icon located at the top of the Start Button Menu and they both
take me to

http://www.update.microsoft.com/micr....aspx?ln=en-us

where I have a choice of Express or Custom installs.

Just for the sake of it, I just opened IE6 then Tools- Windows Update
and it to took me to the above same page :-?

No one I know who had IE6 could get to that page...
are you sure you are not using IE7 or IE8?

That's why I posted a picture of it, taken of my WinXP Pro x32 SP3
install, doing it. The "About" dialog is so you can see what version
of browser was used. All I use IE6 for, is Windows Update. I have
three other browsers for the web.

IE6 it is.

From the about:
Version:6.0.2900.5512.spsp_spe-qdr.130107-o416

If I'm not mistaken, the last critical update included a fix for IE6.

Hmmm I guess you are the exception rather than the rule

If you use XP and IE6 you cannot get to the update page.

Strange, I use XP Home SP3 and IE6 and I had no problems getting the
critical updates yesterday morning. And immediately, after getting the
updates, performed a Belarc Advisor update and system check, results
showed that my system is up to date.

Automatic updates does not use the browser, so that would work fine.
If, however, you open IE6 and attempt to go to www.update.microsoft.com
you will find that it doesn't work. you have to be on IE7 or later
(which, fortunately, can be downloaded directly without using Windows
Update).

In my post I inadvertently left out that I was using I.E. 8, but I
didn't say I was using 6.

Any reason you are still on IE6? It has far too many issues to be a
trustworthy web surfing platform - heck, even Microsoft put a stake
through its heart years ago.
