Default Unable to download

I have Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP, I keep trying to download from
microsoft update sites. When I try the web page shuts down with the message
"Internet
Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" It is driving me mad.

Just a few random ideas:

Have you tried disabling all add-ons, or booting into Safe Mode with
Networking?

Or emptied out all Temporary Internet Files and cookies and starting IE8
with all plugins disabled?
