Be aware that it is *not* due to be released today. What is due to be
released is a *preview* of it. Unless you have a spare computer to try
the preview on, running a preview of an operating system is looking
for trouble as far as I'm concerned.

Windows 8.1 is due to be released sometime around the end of the year.
I strongly recommend that you be patient and wait until then.

You're welcome. Glad to help. Yes, June 26, but just the preview, not
the real release which isn't ready yet.

And note that that says "Should customers simply wait for Windows 8.1
to roll out later this year, or take the Preview plunge on Wednesday?
Sorry Microsoft, but it sounds like the latter option will be a real
pain for most, especially with all the app install and reinstall going
on," which is much the same thing I just said.

Hi, Forte.

Maybe you were awake before the folks in Redmond. ;^}

It's probably all over the Internet by now. I got this paragraph with my
daily One Step Update on Quicken:
"SAN FRANCISCO, June 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Microsoft Corp. today
announced the immediate availability of the Windows 8.1 Preview, the next
update of the Windows operating system, at the company's developer-focused
Build conference. As part of the conference's keynote speech, the company
outlined the reach, design and economic opportunities for developers to
build differentiated, touch-based apps for the Windows platform, including
new developer tools and increased support. Company executives also
highlighted new top apps coming to Windows, including Facebook, Flipboard
and NFL — clear evidence of the steady app momentum for Windows, which is
experiencing the fastest growth across any platform."

As Ken Blake said, that doesn't mean that MOST of us should be in a hurry to
download and try it, just because it is available.

If you are not a confirmed and adventurous Early Adopter, wait at least
until you hear comments from those who rush ahead of the pack.

Yes, the button is back. But in terms of what you get if you click on
it, it's a very different button. As far as I'm concerned, a
third-party program like Start8 is still a good addition.

Try the preview, and then report back to us,
whether your excitement is justified.

I suspect you're in for a disappointment, in terms of
improvements that real people asked for. Microsoft
isn't admitting they were wrong here. It's not that
kind of an update.

It's like Microsoft "made a bad sculpture" and now
they've "added a coat of polish on the outside".
Thinking it wasn't shiny enough.

As they say in Redmond, "the jokes on you".

Paul
