You can call each other on the same LAN with no difficulty and have voice as well as a picture if your boxes have cameras in or attached to them. Skype can also function as a text messenger, without the need for speakers or video. Right you are BobbyM, I had not seen your earlier posting on the subject. The only question is, can you avoid any "Microsoft Account" prompts when using it for the first time ? My understanding is that you must have a Microsoft account if you want to install the "modern skype" app. However, if you install the Skype desktop client from the Skype website, you do not need a Microsoft account. I can't verify this however; as I used a Microsoft account to set up Skype on a Win8 computer at work. Didn't want to use my personal Skype account plus I wanted the person who will replace me someday to be able to use the same email account & Skype user name/account. I use Win7 at home & it's not an issue there; I'm still using my original Skye account. |

We use Pidgin here. It's cross platform if that's of any value. It handles multiple IM protocols, AIM,ICQ, MSN, Yahoo etc. You just need to setup an account on their respective webpage like AIM is https://www.aim.com/ click setup at top. I don't use AIM software, just their account. Last time I used AIM, it was too full of ads. Pidgin is Open Source and has no ads, just a simple chat. Use your aim name and password in pidgin. My wife and I have the same issues. We're 5 feet apart but she has a hearing issue. But I can grab links of webpages and post notes to her in the chat program even when she isn't on line. When she turns on the pc, her chat window will pop open and she'll see all my notes. We find it great for sending links back and forth. Easier than trying to explain a long URL syntax. Any chat program would work, as I noted there are several. And if your friends have accounts on any of the protocols, you can chat with them using one chat program like Pidgin. You have to have separate accounts for each account like AIM, ICQ, Yahoo etc. but that's simple to do. I have friends on all 4. I can use a multi-protocol program like Pidgin to talk to all of them in one program rather than loading 3 different ones. Pidgin: http://www.pidgin.im/ Trillian: https://www.trillian.im/ .... I have an issue with trillian, it requires an account for trillian itself, and then you need the individual accounts for AIM etc. The side effect is, if you reload trillian and login, it will then see all your other account info. As nice as that is, it just requires extra logins to remember. As others have said, skype does do chat, but I find that like using an elephant gun to kill a mouse. |

OT chat between computers
I tried sending URLs by email to my sister. Doesn't work. She still manages to search on keywords that are completely different from the names I give her. There seems to be no way to reliably pass accurate information to a human being without the possibility of corruption at their end. Sad, isn't it? I've had no issues with sending links. Course we're both on win8.1 and using Chrome, so duplicity in software may help one hell of a lot. |

You obviously have a human at the other end who can listen and read and manage to cut-and-paste from email to browser, or manage to simply copy the linkie keystroke-for-character. That is not a boom we are all blessed with. J. "... booN ..." Prue is freeding badly again. J. With a good chat program the receiver does not have to copy and paste, they just click on the link you send them. |
