Is the August update important?
I had problems with some updates like unexpectedly shuts downs. I read
August update was causing crashes in Windows 8.1. I had the help of a remote technician. He uninstalled August update and other security updates. Now Windows is working perfectly except with unwanted wifi traffic. The question I have is if August update is needed for Windows 9 upgrade. I would appreciate someone's help, if is not too soon to know. Thank you all. |

Future o/s releases are usually preceded (at o/s release date or just prior to) by required KB's patches/fixes/etc. It's too soon to predict which KB's (since some might not even be released at this time) would be necessary to install the next Windows o/s (e.g. 9) on top of Windows 8.1 Also of note - Windows 8.0 was the last 'upgrade' ware. Windows 8.1 was full version ware and most likely later o/s will follow that path. -- ...winston msft mvp consumer apps |

I've heard next windows will come in 2015. I'm saving to buy a notebook then
with new windows. I'm not sure but maybe I'll keep W8.1 as it is and will stop doing hotfixes. ". . .winston" escreveu na mensagem ... I bought this laptop 2 years ago and it's just my luck that Windows 8 just happen to suck. Windows 8 works (worked) just fine on the desktop side with a 3rd party start menu/button. I started having problems when I upgraded to 8.1 and update 1 (April update 2014). The OP asked about the August update (I'm thinking the April update was more significant) and if it will be needed to install Windows 9, which will be free for all Windows 8 users. I'm wondering if you will be able to upgrade to Windows 9 from Windows 8 and not 8.1. If so, I will use my recovery discs and put this computer back to Windows 8 and upgrade from there. It will be absolutely ridiculous if a Windows 8 computer has to be upgraded to 8.1, then install whatever updates are needed to install Windows 9. I'm also hoping that HP will have Win9 drivers for machine once it's released. They jumped right on Win 8.1 drivers so that's a good sign. |

If it was bought and not built by the owner or a system builder (both of which would have bought licenses and media) then the OEM (seller) would be the provider and the outfit that chose to not provide media (in lieu of their recovery media or recovery partition) since they didn't want to pay for it - also one of the contributing factors why a reset option is now available. Reset raises an important question - Will MSFT provide a better built-in method to reset to the current installed o/s instead of the factory shipped (or original user installed o/s) when the pc has a later version of Windows than the original installed o/s. - that ability imo would be much more important than requiring everyone to have current media. I also doubt, that if one does not purchase the next version of Windows (on full version media), the download or any special offer via the online Store will be any different than what was made available for 8.1 due to constraints (e.g. one per pc with single product key based on the operating system bitness accessing the download). It would be prudent, if not already available or upgradable, to ensure imaging software (and current Windows o/s compatible) is used to make regular images for easy point-in-time recovery/restoration. -- ...winston msft mvp consumer apps |

I've only upgraded one system in my life (I've always reformatted), and that was my sisters Vista laptop, a year ago this November. And the only reason for that was because for some strange reason the wireless (it's an HP laptop) would not connect to FIOS. Worked with Comcast just fine. But after she switched it wouldn't connect. AT&T gave her a Netgeat wireless adapter to "solve" the problem. I couldn't figure out the problem so I upgraded it to Windows 7. What I didn't do was look at disc space after the upgrade (not a problem for her because she will never come close to maxing out a 400Gb HDD). Sorry for my rambling past my bedtime. My question is, yes I have one, lol...If I upgrade to Windows 9 am I going to have an OS that is taking up 50GBs? |

My guess would be, if you did an Upgrade Install (qualifying OS present that is supported for Upgrade emthod), a "Windows.old" folder is created from the old OS. Settings (stored in the Registry) are copied across. When the job is done, the OS portion of C: would be twice as large. But, if you use Disk Cleanup 5 minutes after the install is done and you've done a couple reboots to be sure it is OK, you can "push the button" in Disk Cleanup, and delete "Windows.old". Don't try to delete "Windows.old" manually, as you won't have permission. Once that process is finished, the OS will deflate to a reasonable size. And that's not how you do it of course. You do a backup first :-) If you really didn't care about the Windows 8/8.1 installation at all, you'd just "clean" the disk with Diskpart in recovery console, and then there would not be any bloat.
