Procedures for doing a user account restore after a clean reinstallof Windows?
Okay, assuming we have a full backup of the computer's users tree, when
we do a clean reinstall, what sort of things have to be done to prepare to restore all of the previous user accounts on this computer? Is there a website with the procedures written down somewhere? I think the easiest way is to use the Windows Easy Transfer Wizard, but that doesn't even exist on Windows 10 anymore. So backup programs are the next best thing, but they don't seem to have the automation necessary to restore user accounts properly. They'll copy all of the user's files back, of course, but they won't set up the user account itself. And of course, this doesn't even include restoring program files. They have to be reinstalled manually. Here the Windows Easy Transfer worked well, as it contained a list of previously installed programs, and you could follow that list to reinstall all or part of the previous apps. Yousuf Khan |

Procedures for doing a user account restore after a cleanreinstall of Windows?

I just did that here. Clean install and than restored an image. The program I purchased to move programs to a new clean install did not work. And I reviewed all the "GOOD" reviews. I also did a clean install and installed all my programs. I keep all program purchase serial numbers. Yup, it was so easy in the days of DOS or Unix. The Registry has just made Microsoft more convoluted at everything. Yousuf Khan |

Yousuf Khan As so much is in the registry now, both OS stuff and user config stuff, it's hard if not impossible to pull out just the user stuff. And reloading the registry is death. Even with the same OS IMHO. I have found over the years most of the settings like config files for CCleaner and of course Browsers and Thunderbird plus others and simply copy them to a stick before a reload. That and an image give me all the ability to reload things in about 1/2 hour. Granted those tiny color settings etc have to be done manually. I've even got .reg files with a lot of changes to "open with" items that make the transition easier. |
