Update kills computer for *SIX* *HOURS*

While doing an semi-on-sight contract, I was in the office last
Wednesday, and I needed to meet with my direct supervisor over some
important information that he needed his computer to access. He was out
the previous day, and has been really busy, and this needed to get done.

But, what was he greeted with when he showed up at 7AM?

His computer, which I believe is one of these

started doing WINDOWS UPDATE as soon as he powered it up!!!

And it KEPT doing that until 1PM. You know how long that is?

*SIX* *****ING* *HOURS* !!!

Yeah, "there went the entire damn day".

Not only had the machine been COMPLETELY taken over by this (obviously
SO GOD DAMNED IMPORTANT that NOTHING ELSE COULD BE DONE until THIS
LINEAR PROCESS WAS FINALLY FINISHED) [read: inverted prioritization],
but FOR THE NEXT HOUR between 1PM and 2PM, even AFTER logging in, the
computer was 'Virtually Unusuable' since CPU and disk access MAINTAINED
100% doing "god knows what uber-important ****-task MicroShaft *FELT* it
needed to do".


And *THIS* is one of the *BIG* reaons why I *HATE* win-10-nic and
*REFUSE* to make it the MAIN OS for a computer. [I'll put it in a VM
for those cases where I need it, but a VM can be killed and even
re-started from a backup to make the computer usable again].

If you *MUST* use Win-10-nic, run it IN A VM (virtualbox comes to mind)
hosted by Linux, FreeBSD, or Windows 7/XP. And make regular backups of
your VM [easier to do than with a Win-10-nic system, actually]. Your
data files can be EASILY hosted in a local share on the host machine,
making it easier to back THEM up, too. And if "updates" makes your VM
UNBOOTABLE, you can restore the OS backup VERY easily [assuming you do
your backups correctly].


Oh, and WHAT OS do I use for that semi-on-site contract? Why Devuan
Linux, of course! I'm doig embedded development, involving Linux, and
as such I really _SHOULD_ run Linux. It's SO MUCH more reliable. I
actually offered to install Linux, somewhat jokingly, and everyone 'got
the joke', but yeah when I said "I could install it faster than Windows
Update finisheing" (or similar, at around 9AM, 2 hours after it started)
it was generally (sarcastically, cynically) agreed that I was *RIGHT*

And based on the amount of time it ACTUALLY TOOK, I *WAS* right! (Linux
install with very fast network, about 2 hours).

Frankly, you should be fired for not being able to control updates
and/or upgrades on a Windows 10 machine. People like you are a disgrace

The easiest way to handle Windows up dates is: when you don't need the
computer. Started the upgrade before you go home and it will be
finished when you need the computer the next morning. Most updates will
install with no input from the computer owner.

I have also update the computer when I know I am not going to be using
the computer, ie going to a meeting, have visors, interviews, OR take
it home and do it while you are mowing the yard.

The best way for Windows 10 upgrades not to mess up your day, is to
schedule the upgrade as soon as the upgrade is available and at your
convenience.

FYI - I don't manage IT, I do engineering. And I blame IT for using
Win-10-nic in the FIRST place...

On the Insider Fast ring right now, you'd be
amazed at how short the outage is for the
"actual install" of the next version of Windows 10.

The activity leading up to it (while you're still
using the computer) is still a long time, but they're
front-loaded the install, such that the reboot phase
is a lot shorter.

As for the "six hours" thing, you can help that along
by disabling Windows Defender and (trying to) stop
the Search Indexer.
