My service provided the same facility. I d/l the list, printed

8pt font-size, and carried it with me when travelling. :-)

8pt so nobody could read it over your shoulder?

So it would fit in my wallet.

Ah, you must be a Scotsman with a small wallet.

I haven't got a wallet. What nationality am I?

Hmmm!

This you, Steve?

One could assume that you are also British - but you may NOT be! ;-)

Yes, that's me but I still haven't got a wallet! Wallets are too easy
to lose or get stolen.

I don't usually carry one.* I normally only have one monetary item
with me, a debit card.* I just slip that in my pocket.* I only use a
wallet for cash.

We differ. I don't carry any cards or cash. I leave all money spending
up to my wife! She may have a wallet somewhere in her bottomless
handbag.

ROFL!* I know people like you.* One of them refers to his wife as "the
purse".* Mind you, she has complete control over every decision of
anything that costs money.* All he does is earn it.

:-) It's good to see a bit of British banter for a change! :-)

Windows 10 Pro ships with Hyper-V. This makes it easy to set up virtual
machines. I am currently posting using a VM set up in Hyper-V.

It is possible, but annoying, to set up Hyper-V in Windows 7.

It is possible to use other virtual machine systems in Windows 7.
Virtual Box is free, and worth every penny. VMWare has a free version,
but usually costs a fair amount of money. Hyper-V is a lot better
behaved than Virtual Box. It is a sad commentary on Oracle's (lack of)
customer support that Microsoft support for Hyper-V is far better than
Oracle's support for Virtual Box.

Windows 10 Pro has better network security, even if it is produced by
Microsoft. Current versions simply do not allow certain bad practices to
occur; you can't get there from here. (SMB1 is just one of the dead
protocols, and good riddance to them.)

Windows 10 runs faster than Windows 7 on my hardware. Windows 10 in a
Hyper-V VM runs faster than Windows 7 on my system. I have two
partitions on this system: one is Windows 10, one used to be Windows 7.
It is now Ubuntu 1804. I plan to kill the Ubuntu partition and make the
entire logical drive just one partition, running Windows 10, and use
Hyper-V VMs for Windows 10 and 7, and Ubuntu.

IE is there because it supports ActiveX.

Some banking institutions are "hooked" on IE,

As a practical matter, both are useful, but not to

very few sites require activex anymore, since such sites won't work on

If you think usenet is bad, try web forums. Ask any simple question and immediately an argument starts and you get thrown off the forum. I got banned from windows10forums for mentioning Piratebay. I've been yelled at numerous times on pistonheads for implying some garages rip people off, it's ridiculous.

I've used Opera to access a few bank accounts quite successfully. None required activeX. I thought activeX was M$ crap that nobody used. If my bank insisted on it I'd change bank.

I just get useless answers from there. Nobody understands the question being asked.

That's if I'm thinking of the same place as you, I'm referring to where a M$ representative answers for you. They call themselves MVPs or something, and have no clue about anything.

An MVP is *not* a Microsoft representative. MVP stands for "Most
Valuable Professional" and it's an honorary title granted to people
who have been consistently helpful in answering questions.

Three other points:

1. Questions can be and are answered by anybody. It's not always an
MVP.

2. MVPs, like any other category, vary in how much they know and how
good they are at explaining something. Some know a lot, others know
much less. But as a general rule, most MVPs are very good. And some
ordinary, non-MVPs in the Microsoft forums are also very good.

3. Besides MVPs and other ordinary non-MVPs, occasionally a Microsoft
contractor (not an employee) answers a question. There are a few
exceptions--some of those Microsoft contractors are also very
good--but most of those people are terrible at answering questions.
For most of them, English is a second language, and besides expressing
themselves terribly, they often don't understand the question.

Fortunately, it's a small percentage of answers that come from those
contractors. But the forums would be a better place if Microsoft would
stop using them. I've several times suggested to Microsoft employees
that they stop using them, but I've been ignored.

I see, I thought it was a qualification - some kind of exam set by Microsoft that people use to get a job.

But: "consistently helpful in answering questions" - funny how I've never seen a helpful answer by them (or anyone) on that forum.

Three other points:

1. Questions can be and are answered by anybody. It's not always an

I must have looked at about 15 questions on there, every single one was only answered by an MVP.

Unless we're talking about two different forums.

2. MVPs, like any other category, vary in how much they know and how
good they are at explaining something. Some know a lot, others know
much less. But as a general rule, most MVPs are very good. And some

Then the means of giving them MVP status has failed.

Actually I've seen quite a lot of answers from non-English speaking people. They tend to use cut and paste replies and don't understand what they're being asked at all.

What you say is correct, Mr Blake.

There's no need to be quite so modest though. You should be PROUD of
having being awarded the MVP accolade! :-)

https://social.technet.microsoft.com...crosoft%20mvp/

I had a notion that you were once a member of the VSOPs too, but cannot
find you featured on the 'rogues gallery', so perhaps I am mistaken!

http://www.aumha.org/vsop.htm

I expect you know some of the names listed there. There's one notable
fellow missing on that particular showing though.

Randy Knobloch aka siljaline (AH-VSOP)

Montréal, CANADA. “IT consultant. Only true Quebecer in family and proud
of it. Family originates from Germany. I discovered the MS and MVP world
by fluke and haven’t looked back since. A true passion for me. I love to
help others help themselves with their computing problems. Volunteering
my time is, a joy.”

https://web.archive.org/web/20080714...rg:80/vsop.htm

Is he/was he a 'good guy' ...... or a bad one?!!!

I know "nobody cares" but there *IS* some history still available for
anyone who cares to read it!

No, nothing like that. As a matter of fact a Microsoft employee can
*not* also be an MVP. An MVP occasionally becomes a Microsoft employee
(I've known a few), but when he does, he loses his MVP status.

But: "consistently helpful in answering questions" - funny how I've never seen a helpful answer by them (or anyone) on that forum.

Then you looked at a very small sampling of questions and answers. Or
considering how you've shown yourself here to know so little, more
probably because you wouldn't know a helpful answer if you saw one.

Three other points:

1. Questions can be and are answered by anybody. It's not always an

I must have looked at about 15 questions on there, every single one was only answered by an MVP.

As I said, you looked at a very small sampling of questions and

First, most questions are answered by several people.

Second, many of the regular answerers are not MVPs.

I just went to Windows forum and looked at a random page of questions.
Here are some statistics:

Question 1. Two answers, neither by an MVP

Question 2. Three answers, none by an MVP

Question 3. No answers

Question 4. One answer, not by an MVP

Question 5. No answers

Question 6. One answer, not by an MVP

Question 7. One answer, not by an MVP

Question 8. Two answers, neither by an MVP

Question 9. One answer, not by an MVP

Question 10. One answer, not by an MVP

Question 11. One answer, not by an MVP

Question 12. One answer by an MVP

etc.

Unless we're talking about two different forums.

There are many Microsoft community forums. I only participate in the
Windows forums, and what I say is based on my experience there. But I
would be surprised if the other forums varied much in that respect.

2. MVPs, like any other category, vary in how much they know and how
good they are at explaining something. Some know a lot, others know
much less. But as a general rule, most MVPs are very good. And some
ordinary, non-MVPs in the Microsoft forums are also very good.

Then the means of giving them MVP status has failed.

Showing your ignorance again.

Actually I've seen quite a lot of answers from non-English speaking people. They tend to use cut and paste replies and don't understand what they're being asked at all.

Wow! Something we agree on! Or almost agree on. They are not
non-English speaking. They speak English as a second language, and
therefore often not very well. They are not all Microsoft contractors,
but most of them are.

I'm just guessing since I've never met any of these contractors, but I
think most of them have very little Windows experience. They simply do
searches on questions and cut and paste whatever they can find.
