Default Desktop Icons Disappear

HELP ! When we walk away from the computer now, the
icons on the XP desktop completely vanish. We are left
with the regular background screen only. (This is not the
blue screen of death). . . Our mouse prompt disappears
and the only option to get the computer to function is to
turn it off/on again.

This JUST started yesterday. ANY advice is appreciated.
