Desktop not available

A friend of mine is getting the following message from the built in
admin account...

"C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Desk top is not available."
Plus more blather.

Lot's of possible answers on a Duck Duck Go search, but looking for a
definitive fix if anyone has one.

One possibility is that the profile is corrupt. On earlier versions of
Windows you'd sometimes log on, get a message something like that, and
find all your personal stuff apparently gone, as they system would
actually have created a new profile and given you that. Mostly, the
information could be retrievable via a hunt in File Explorer, but quite
often a full disk check with repair could fix it.

Worth also looking to see if your disk is deteriorating using a SMART
monitoring tool. I've used Acronis Drive Monitor, HDTune and Defraggler
(Health tab). These are all free. Now I use HD Sentinel, modestly
priced, which does a very thorough job of monitoring. You can expend a
license on a "portable" version, which can be run from a USB memory
stick.
