Windows media player help .asf

when ever i try to open a windows media player link it
saves it as a link and at the end there is . asf and
whenever i try to play it it says that windows media
player does not support this file. but before it all used
to work fine i did not have to save nothing. can you
help me please i have got windows media player seris 9
and windowsxp home edition thanks,
