Automatic Update Download OFF but still Downloads

I think that MS is downloading updates even though updates is set to
Notify Only.
I just saw a bunch of data being downloads at 200KBpS for some time.
Then the Yellow Shield indicated that there were updates to be
downloaded.
I again checked my settings and found them still set to Notify Only.
I then clicked on the Shield opened window and told it to Download.
Again I got a lot of KBpS.

What is going on?

Previously I had to reboot after I killed svchost that was eating up
95+% of my CPU for a long time - minutes. svchost command line was for
-k netsvcs.
While downloading right now it is eating up 50% of the CPU.

Is there any way to throttle that back?
I need to do my work!

Re-check your settings. I've notice that on a lot of XP machines...if
set to "notify only" ...the application of updates often changes the
settings to "automatically update"

and yes, that is very annoying and uncalled for.


There is a possibility that if you turn off updates completely it will
stay that way...and you can just manually update when you have the time.

Yes, I agree [philo] - Sometimes, just turning off "Automatic Updates" in
the Window's Control Panel extension of the same name, is not enough...

If, for *any* reason, you need updates turned off completely (something
that I don't recommend, without manually turning in back on again - once in
a while), but if you want to stop the auto-update featu- open the MMC
Console Add-In - "Local Services" - (should be found in "Administrative
Tools", on your Start Menu, or type: "" into the "Run-Box"), then open the
"Automatic Updates" service and firstly "Stop" the "Automatic Updates"
service (by pressing the "Stop" button - if it was started), then, change
the "Startup type", displayed in the "drop-down-menu", from "Automatic" or
"Manual", to: "Disabled"

It is important to, periodically, re-enable "Automatic Updates", in order
to keep Windows XP up-to-date, which is very important when it comes to
essential updates that address recently discovered security
vulnerabilities. Do remember, then, to reverse the procedure, by first
re-enabling "Automatic Updates" service start-up type to "manual" before
opening Control Panel's "Window's Updates" and setting it to:
"Automatic"...

P.S. You can then "force" a search for updates, in the background, by
typing the following command into the Run-Box on your Start Menu :

wuauclt.exe /detectnow

That burned me last week. I had lent my laptop to somebody - who
reported a problem a week later. Turned out the night before, MS qued
a bunch of updates even though updates were turned off. After about
the third re-boot, it finally became usable again. Whew!

One more annoyace is that if you turn off automatic updates, you get
nagged about them being turned off! That notification needs to be
disabled as well.

I have all those notifications turned off.

I check manually about once a month.

I noticed that the update service is a bit of a hog for download time slices.

What would be nice is to be able to download just critical downloads at some preset time and date.

That was my policy until, one day, an update hosed my laptop - which
was, if not exactly required, at least a major convenience factor for
work. The thing was down for something like 4 days. Can't recall
what I did to get it back, but it involved a lot of Googling....

I've had other instances too.

Makes sense to me. I do try to make an image of my C drive weekly or so anyway.

You right click in the notification area (the right side of your
taskbar) and you can select how you want to display warnings. You can
take the option not to show notifications
