Default Some Updates Could Not Be Installed.

That's the message I get when tryihng to intsall updates in XP SP2, and I've
been getting it for about 2 months. I have 15 updates that can't be
installed. To top it off, if I try to install SP 3, after the install process
finishes and it reboots, it gets to the blue Welcome screen and stops.

Needless to say, the Knowledge base doesn't address this. Anyone have any
ideas?

Tried using a search engine (Google, etc) to look for others with similar
issues?

I only ask because the usual solution to what you seem to have in the way of
an issue is posted several times a week (day maybe?) throughout the internet
in newsgroups like this one (probably mostly in this one and propogated all
over the world.) Perhaps - in the future - you could use something like
Google to speed up your solution-finding-missions. ;-) Just a suggestion.

First thing to try:
As many will tell you - ignore the title and symptoms listed in the article
referred to. Do method 1 and 2 and see if it fixes your issue whether or
not you repaired anything.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
Try method 1 and try to update*.
If fails - try method 2 and try to update*.

*try to update:
- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
- If it asks you to install anything before you see a selection of "Custom"
or "Express" - do so.
- Once you see the "Custom" or "Express" selection, choose "Custom".
- Scan for updates.
- When it lists what it finds - install the critical ones.
- You are generally safe doing the Optional Software Updates. I suggest
avoiding the Optional Hardware Updates completely.

** Second thing to try:
http://www.codeplex.com/aureset
** Temporarily down (??) for internal audit. Skip this fix for now. I will
leave the link in case it comes back up.

Third thing to try:
Get Dial-a-Fix:
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Use its options to fix:
- Windows Installer
- Windows Update
- All the Registration Center options.

Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"
Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution".

Then click "GO" and wait until it is done... Reboot will be needed.

- Download/Install Windows Update v3.
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237
(You *may* need to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce"
right after the reboot - immediately after logging in.)

- Reboot.
- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for/install updates.

Usually - method one from the first suggestion fixes the issue.
Sometimes they have to proceed to method two from the first suggestion.

Less seldom - but it does happen - only the tool from the second suggestion
will work - although the first suggestion is contained within the second in
many ways (as well as some of the third.)

And the third suggestion is there because before there was a suggestion (1)
and a suggestion (2) - the third was the best bet and worked in most cases.

Default Some Updates Could Not Be Installed.

Thank you for the attempt to help me. Yes I tried searching, google was not
returning anything helpful. Searching the Microsoft knowledge base is an
exercise in futility as many of the leads only reiterated the same basic 2
steps that you did in your reply, which I had done several times.

I had already tried the microsoft update page, several times. Each and every
instance resulted in the same outcome.

The options below I haven't tried, and probably won't at this point. About
an hour after my orginal post, I simply threw up my hands, and delved into
the WINDOWS director and found the SoftwareDistribution directroy. I manually
deleted all files in this directory, then attempted to install the updates,
both through the automatic update process and the manual Microsoft page.
Still, the outcome did not change.

I returned to the SoftwareDistribution directory and manually started each
upgrade, all 15. I then downloaded the XP SP3 package which was in an ISO
disk image.

Which is a third complaint I have. Microsoft Windows has no native method of
mounting this image, and it was the only package that I wanted to download. I
wasn't going to download an IT package of SP3. I resolved my ISO disk image
problem by mounting it on my Mac and starting the upgrade manually from the
image. Ironic isn't it?

I am not a happy customer of Microsoft, especially of the extremely
disappointing search capabilities that this site has. There is no OPTION for
granularity in searching for keywords, no abilities to use a phrase, just
unrelated and unconnected keywords, which ended up giving me from 200 to 52
hits on my query, which means it was generally useless.

And finally, it took me over 10 minutes to find these forums on Microsoft's
site. Which says they really could care less about providing service or
support. Why hide these forums? They should be easily accessible from the
home page or no lower than the Support page.

Is it any wonder people bash Microsoft? I think my effort of last night,
which took me 4 hours to finally resolve, gives me right to complain in the
only manner that I have available right now. Certainly Microsoft allows no
conduit to tell them how disgusted and angry I am at the low standard that
they present.

Default Some Updates Could Not Be Installed.

I tried the dial-a-fix solution. Since I still can't get the Malicious
Software Removal tool to install, I thought that I'd give suggestions 2 and
three a shot. Still not working right.
