How to use Backup Utility
Hi,
I am trying to use Windows XP Backup utility and am confused on how to proceed. I looked at the instructions both on my computer and the web and am still lacking information. I would like to do an incremental backup. But how do I do that. Do I create two backup files? The first backup file would be a normal backup of everything. Then I would create a second backup file that is the incremental type? Also, how do I set the radio button on the "Backup Job Information" dialogue box. It asks me "if the media already contains backups" to choose either "append this backup to the media" or "replace the data on the media with this backup". Which do I choose and when? On that same dialogue box, it also asks "if the media is overwritten, use this label to identify the media". Do I change the name each time a do an incremental backup, or does the program change the name automatically? Thanks for your help on these questions. Kevin Miller |

How to use Backup Utility
When you launch Backup use the Advanced Mode - click the link on the
Backup/Restore Wizard or uncheck the box that says "Always start in Wizard mode". IMO Advanced Mode is easier 1) From the Welcome to Backup Utility Advanced Mode screen click on "Backup" Tab (not the button but the Tab) 2) Select the folders, files etc to backup up. 3) Browse to where you want the backup saved and enter a name for the backup. 4) click the "Start Backup" button and you will get the "Backup Job Info" screen where you can view and manage the backup 5) If you want incremental backups then click the "Advanced Button" and change the Backup type drop down to "Incremental" You can also setup your schedules etc. You have to play around with it a bit to get the hang of it. Be aware that the Backup Utility does not save directly to CD Writers without a work around http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/saving_files_to_cd.htm The full featured version of this app is called Backup MyPC from www.stompinc.com It will save directly to CD without a work around. -- Harry Ohrn - MS MVP (Windows Shell/User] www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/ www.webtree.ca/newlife/ "Kevin Miller" wrote in message ...
