"maurice" wrote in message ... After reading about all the peoblems that can & do arise from downloading SP3 what is the best way to do this???? Or should I jst go with waht I have SP2 Loring H. Most people have not had problems but there are some that do. I have installed SP3 on a test PC without problems but on my PC that I use for every day use. Below is most of what you need to know. If you have an HP computer please post back before you start as there are known issues with some HP computers. Note: Service Pack 2 - Support/security updates end as of July 13th, 2010. This is another reason to move install SP3. http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifesupsps http://support.microsoft.com/lifecyc...en-us&x=7&y=11 Also if I where to install SP3 I would choose to download the file and not use Automatic Updates. Your PC must be at least SP1 or SP2 level as SP3 will not install on XP Gold. I would also create an "Image Backup" of my drive prior to installing SP3 just in case you do have problems. Don't have any Image Backup softwa Try "True Image" (has a 15 day trial version available) http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing...cts/trueimage/ If you use Zone Alarm Firewall (Free or Paid) then update to the most recent version. Install SP3 in 'Clean Boot' mode: How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353 How to obtain the latest Windows XP service pack http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389 Where to download the SP3 installation file: (File is large but will only install components that your PC requires) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en Windows XP Service Pack 3 Overview http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en Be sure to download and read the file titled 'Overview of Windows XP Service Pack 3' Note: "You can run the SP3 update package on any edition of Windows XP SP1 or SP2." I installed SP3 on my home PC and 12-13 work PC's with no problems. The IT department in our main office in Ohio installed it on 100+ with no problems. The only PC I had a problem with was my SO's (figures!). The AMD patch from HP took care of that for her. Here's some reading on what to do befo http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717 SC Tom |

If you're reading about problems *here*, this where people come with their problems, not with their successes. You get a very distorted view of what's going on in the real world here; as someone once said, "hang around a transmission shop and you will think that all cars have transmission problems." 2. Most problems, by far, that people report here--whether or not they are SP3-related--have nothing to do with defects in the software. They result from people's ignorance, from bad or inadequate hardware, from old drivers, from viruses, from spyware, and so on. And except for very rare situations, they always get a fix for their problems, and in most cases, that fix is a very simple one to implement. I've installed SP3 on several machines, with no problems on any of them. In my view, you should install SP3. However read here before installing it: "Steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3" at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717 -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) since 2003 Please Reply to the Newsgroup |

And when it was new, there were many report of problems, and that's what I was talking about, and pointing out that they were not typical of people's experiences. I upgraded several hundred pcs to it through WSUS and about 50 local installs with no problem. Then you've done even more than I have. But we both had no problems doing this. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) since 2003 Please Reply to the Newsgroup |

I would locate and download the full SP3 for Administrator locally onto your PC. I would then: Disconnect from the Internet Turn off most "auto-start" applications Disable all / any antivirus systems Uninstall IE 7 / 8 (SP will freeze IE to the level at time of install. You may have problems to fix IE 7 / 8 because you will not be able to uninstall / reinstall it after SP3 installs) Then, run the SP3 install. |
