Cursor went wild - W-10 HP laptop
"Rabid Robot" wrote in message ... On 2019-08-23 9:50 p.m., RHB wrote: How can I find and replace the driver? I don't know why it works for maybe 15 minutes, then the touch screen stops working and cursor is almost double. There are two cursors, one stuck on the start button and other kind of jumping around but with a capitol I instead of the pointer/cursor. If it looks like a letter I, it generally indicates that you're within a program where you can type things in. That kind of cursor is what appears when you're navigating a text field. Have you bothered to do some kind of _complete_ virus check? MS Essentials is running now doing a compete check. Can you suggest/recommend a good free anti-virus program? I probably should have more than MSE on here but haven't had a virus on any of the PC in years. |

Another odd thing is there is a gray circle behind the start button with a cursor pointing upward in addition to the capitol I cursor that jerks around when I try to use it. TWO cursors at one time? Also the touch feature doesn't work when this happens. Perhaps the cursor is madly flying about between the two locations ? Paul |

You mentioned you have Classic Shell, so you probably also have Classic Start Menu. If so, you should be able to control most things from the keyboard, i.e. press the Windows key (four-squares, probably left of the left alt key). That will probably bring up the Classic Start Menu and you can move arround with the arrows keys, select with the enter key, etc.. That way you could open Control Panel and take it from there. And of course you can connect an external keyboard or/and 'mouse'. There is nothing there that is helpful for this problem. A mouse is connected. What do you mean "open Control Panel and take it from there?" There is nothing there that is helpful for this problem. I'll see if I can connect another keyboard. I assume this wont be happening on a connected keyboard. ?!?!?!? What would that show? That the problem is the LT's keyboard? I'm on the LT with the problem and using the capitol I cursor as the regular cursor is in the gray circle at the Start button. I found the thing for this cursor, a choice thing, and it said it was working properly. I had no clue what some of the choices given meant so made no changes there. Made no sense. |

The capitol I can be used as a cursor but is sloppy and jumpy. I'm using it today but it's difficult to use and inaccurate. It's constantly flickering and flashing the green cursor. |

RHB isn't making sense.
Jeff-Relf.Me @. wrote in message ... RHB isn't making sense. When I suggested a solution, he told me it was fixed, and that I should read the thread to see the solution. Has he tried a different mouse, in a different USB port ? Wrong person. It was not fixed and I do not know the solution. It's not the mouse because the touch pad is the same and the touch screen doesn't work when this happens - mouse attached or not. I'm running a full scan now and downloaded a Avast. I'll get another one also. If they don't find anything I guess it's time to take it to a professional. No one here seems familiar with this problem. |

Cursor went wild - W-10 HP laptop
"Paul" wrote in message ... RHB wrote: First I have to find the setting wheel using Classic Shell on W-10. Right-click the desktop and select Personalize. https://www.digitaltrends.com/comput...ike-windows-7/ Personalize is a subsection of Settings App. Now you're inside Settings. Found it. Found mouse. Says it's working correctly when of course it isn't. MS essentials found no threats. It was a total scan. Avast is next. ******* It's also possible to make launcher shortcuts, but this is not exactly a pleasant or convenient experience. https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/...dows-10-a.html No short cuts needed as it's only 2 clicks. |

What do you mean "open Control Panel and take it from there?" There is nothing there that is helpful for this problem. From Control Panel, you can navigate to 'Hardware and Sound', where you can check things like 'Mouse', touchpad, 'Device Manager' and I assume something for the touchscreen. The 'Keyboard' is probably under 'Appearance and Personalisation. 'Device Manager' should give you more information on what is / is not working. By disabling the input devices - except the keyboard - one by one, you'll probably find which device is the culprit. I'll see if I can connect another keyboard. I assume this wont be happening on a connected keyboard. ?!?!?!? What would that show? That the problem is the LT's keyboard? Please don't be so defensive. We're trying to help, but you give us little to go on and are (too) reluctant to try things with the pointers we (can) give. |

Also, unless you're blocking known ad sites which are known to deliver malware from your hosts file, it isn't very bright not to be using some sort of anti-virus especially if you have no idea how to fix the issues which may arise over time. I can't recommend third-party ones since I don't know them well, but many Internet service providers a commercial one like Bitdefender (my favorite) and McAfee at no charge. |

Cortana is going berserk ?
RHB wrote:
the cursor went crazy. It flickered and the pointer stayed jumping around the Start button while the other thing like a I jumped around as I tried to settle on something. That happens to me when I leave "speech commands" on. If I leave my microphone on, for dictation and commands, and I answer my Bria soft-phone, all kinds of weird things happen, as if I was randomly pressing the keypad. I use "Nuance Dragon Professional"; but, in your case, it might be Cortana. |

Have you tried unpluging your microphone ?
RHB replied ( to me ):

Sorry, RHB, I got you confused with Rene Lamontagne, with this printer problem. It's not the mouse because the touch pad is the same and the touch screen doesn't work when this happens - mouse attached or not. Have you tried unpluging your microphone ? If that doesn't work, try unplugging and/or disabling other devices. |
