Is SP2 installed? SP2 reinstalls a new revision of IE6.

Yes. Shows as SP2. Strictly speaking this is Media Center Edition. It
initially tried to load IE but was unsuccessful as previously
outlined. So far haven't been successful getting hooked back up to my
DSL connection or the connection to the other computer.

Sounds like your Boot Sequence in BIOS does not have the drive
you're installing to included.

1st, CD
2nd, Drive you intend to install to.

It does, it's set up exactly as you've outlined.

Does your BIOS allow booting from either IDE (PATA) or SATA?

You mean, 'Does your SATA Controller allow it to be configured as IDE in
BIOS'?

That setting ALSO
HD0 can mean (PATA) IDE0 or if the SATA is configured as PATA#
(My Abit board could go either way AND RAID mode if Boot Other Onboard was
set, which has its own (drive order menu, just for SATA devices).

Way to many way to muck it up when you have many drives of both types
installed)
If you have SCSI card, the Ctrl-A (at POST) menu sets which drive # to boot
from.

Do you use a router with your DSL connection? If not, you probably
have to reset the modem after switching it to the 2nd PC. Are you
sure it's a crossover cable and not a normal cat5e/cat6 cable? It has
to be a crossover cable to work correctly between 2 computers.

on that second auto reboot (the
first time I wasn't actually watching the screen) it's giving the
"Press any key to boot from CD" - if I don't do anything it hangs and
then after a minute or two it adds an "Inval0d partition
table" (misspelling per the screen) message and splashes a few random
characters in the black screen below. And there it stays.

If you are sure the boot process is looking at the correct
drive (hard drive C:\) this indicates trouble with the drive
format. You should probably run the drive maker's diagnostics.
