OT Internet speed increase
Yesterday I received an offer from Shaw cable to upgrade my Shaw
internet plan to their 150 mbs plan for an additional $4.90 cdn per month. I know I really don't need the extra speed but for that price, What the heck. Today I did a speedtest on Ookla Speedtest.net and here are the results. on a 30 mbs plan before Download 36.62 mbs. upload 5.67 mbs. Ping 11 Afer on the 150 mbs plan Download 178.52 mbs. Upload 16.67 mbs. Ping 8 This is using a Cisco DPC3848V Docsis 3 high speed WIFI Modem/Router. I realize this won't do much difference on general browsing but which will certainly help with the huge windows updates when required or any other large Program downloads, I don't do any music or video D/ls or streaming but I'm sure it would help there also. Just for information Rene |

The relatively low additional cost is a good indicator that speed increases now offer more benefit to the ISP than they do to the consumer. Most of my professional experience is with wireless (cellular) networks, but the same holds true for wired networks. The quicker you can get someone off of the network, the quicker you can free up bandwidth for someone else. That's important because of the massive oversubscription model that ISPs follow. |
