Boot-up and SP2 question
1) I've recently re-formatted my computer. Now, when I boot up the computer,
I have to manually choose (enter) microsoft xp, before it chose it automatically. How do I get it to do it automatically? 2) I think I downloaded SP2, but not sure. How do I check it on my computer? Thanks for any help, Malia |

Your boot.ini file should look something like this: timeout=5 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS=@Micro soft Windows XP Professional@ /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn 2) I think I downloaded SP2, but not sure. How do I check it on my computer? Press the WinKey (the funny looking mostly useless key that is down near the ctrl and alt buttons on a conventional keyboard -- it looks like the Windows Logo usually though some say start) Press the PAUSE BREAK key at the same time (or just hold WinKey and the Pause/Break) and a system properties screen will popup. There? Good... Does the first tab say "Service Pack 2" on it? No? Then you don't have SP2. Yes. Then you have SP2... While you're there... Tick advanced under the startup and recovery options fix your boot.ini with a handy little GUI. Get rid of the account that you don't use by setting one as default and getting rid of the time to show the list or edit it manually and just remove the one you don't want. I find the manual editing easier. Galen -- Signature changed for a moment of silence. Rest well Alex and we'll see you on the other side. |

Hello,
I just installed Service Pack 2 on my laptop (running XP Pro). It was the full developer version, the 266 MG download. It installed successfully. However, it literally takes like 20 - 25 minutes to boot up, painfully slow. I also noticed some performance issues on trying to shut down -- like the processor was just 'clocking' for a couple minutes, and finally came back and continued with the shut down process. Any ideas? These boot-up and shut-down issues surfaced immediately after installing SP 2. Thanks. I'd post this as it's own separate question, it's worth it unless this is the same user with a new name that posted the first question. Galen -- Signature changed for a moment of silence.
