Reshowing system tray icons after explorer.exe crashes?

Hello.

Is there a way to restore the missing system tray icons after Windows
XP's explorer.exe crashed/killed without rebooting or logging off/on?

Launch Task Manager (Ctrl + Alt + Delete or Ctrl + Shift + Esc).
Click on the File menu and select New Task(Run).
Enter explorer.exe in the Open box and click OK.

Note: You can also try launching the Run box by hitting the Windows key +
the R key at the same time.

Those icons rely on the software that put them there to "restore" them.
IOW If the software that originally put them there does not refresh
them, then they won't reappear. Logging off and back on restarts the
software that put them there and that is the "fix".

(http://www.pssoftlab.com/pstf_info.phtml ) and Trayer
(http://www.kfsoft.com/trayer/features.htm -- mentioned just started to
support W2K). PS Tray Factory is nice. I was able to regain my icons.
Too bad they're not freeware.

Use TrayMan, it's the best one and totally free. All the others are buggy or just don't work.

A bit old (2000 and doesn't mention XP), but it works. However, on my
other XP system (Home SP2), installer freezes at 99%.

I finally got it to install if I killed the process and retry. I
rebooted and tested an Explorer crash manually (on purpose) to see
what happens when I restart Explorer. I got a bunch of crazy icons as
shown in http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/9...eenshotry3.gif ...
That's not good.

Your screen shot shows that TrayMan worked perfectly. Those "crazy icons"
are 'Task Manager' icons, one for each time it changed.

Strange. In VMware v5.5.8 with XP Pro. SP2, I wasn't able to reproduce
multiple Task Manager icons. How about your XP machine?

TrayMan works perfectly on my machine.

I'm not going to test your problem, however you can experiment. Close
explorer.exe with the 'Task Manager' open in another tab other than
"Performance' or 'Networking'.
