Help setting up Thunderbird

I have installed TB and am trying to configure for newsgroups but I
can't seem to get it right. I am at Server Settings and seem to have
everything right but I see no place to enter my password. In the
server name window I have entered news60.forteinc.com with port 119.
Security settings connection security is set to None but something is
obviously wrong. Can anyone offer some assistance please.

password. I can see all the folders for email full like in outlook but
I can't seem to send or receive any new test messages.

And if it doesn't ask for password, there's a tick box to force it to
authenticate if the server doesn't ask for it (e.g. eternal september

unless you do)

Then you need to right click the account and use "subscribe" to get the
group list.

TB)? Watch like a hawk, at various parts of the screen - bottom left is
popular - as they may appear only briefly. (Alternatively, I don't know
if TB has the facility to make log files: if it does, try that, and
examine them afterwards.)

(Can you _send_ email?) Are there any settings for whether
authentication/encryption is/are required, and if so, what sort? If so,
try them all, though it may take forever to work through all
combinations.

Alternatively, since TB is a pretty common s/w, poke around on the
website of your provider (both mail and news) to see if there's a page
showing how to set it up; most common providers do have such a page.
(Who are your providers? Sounds like you're using forteinc, for news at
least, and I didn't know they were a provider, only of software
[Agent].) Alternatively², there may well be other sites out there -
google for setup Thunderbird forteinc (or whoever) - provided by fellow
"sufferers".

Thunderbird should prompt you the first time, for a username
and password. And if you tick the box to remember the info,
you shouldn't have to enter it again. TB does occasionally
"forget" the info, but that happens when the server "rejects"
the information offered. So if the newsserver "farts" as it
does occasionally, TB may request you to type in the password
again. If that happens too often, complain to the admin of
the server to get it fixed. (A server should not be rejecting
valid credentials...)

TB won't ask you for a user-id and psw until you try to access the NNTP
server successfully and request the list of NG(s) to subscribe to and
make selections. It will ask you at that time, and it will also ask at
that time if you would like to save the user-id and psw permanently.
This is if you have the settings set correctly to access the NNTP server.

It also does the same thing for POP3 and SMPT that is ask for the
user-id and psw when you have successfully accessed the email server the
first on those protocols.

That is the server(APN) that I have been using since I installed Agent
some time ago. It cost $2.99 or so if I remember correctly. It works
with any newsreader it seems.

Well, you should be prepared for TB to lose that user-id and psw on NNTP
from time to time, and it will ask for them when you try to access a NG.
The rules I don't bother with as they are weak for sure.

There is a Saved Password button off of Tools/Security/Password where
you can delete user-id and psw for Pop23, SMTP and NNTP and reset for
new entries.

Message rules/filters, do you mean? It does have them. In some regards
they are much more flexible than Outlook since you can filter on more
and sometimes customisable factors.

I have been getting returned messages now and I can't figure out why. I
think I will stick with Outlook for the email. I do prefer TB over Agent

they are much more flexible than Outlook since you can filter on more
and sometimes customisable factors.

Somehow I can't see that. I like Outlook rules that allows you to create
folders and then apply the rules when an email arrives. I have dozens of
folders and never have I gotten wrong messages in any. Maybe it just
takes more getting used to.
